Bangkok first became the capital of Thailand (previously known as Siam) in 1782. This happened when the general Chao Phraya Chakkri took the throne as Rama I. He moved the court from the west to the east bank of the Chao Phraya river. The city was built based off of the previous capital and continued to be added to by Rama II and Rama III.
